Squid Game Season 2 is a 2024 Drama, Mystery & Thriller Movie directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk and written by Hwang Dong-hyuk. The film stars Lee Jung-Jae, Lee Byung-Hun, Wi Ha-Jun, and Gong Yoo with a runtime of 1 hour and 49 minutes, and will be released on December 26, 2024.
In the new trailer, which was released today, a hardened Gi-hun (Lee Jung-Jae), aka Player 456, returns to the deadly games with one goal in mind: to bring to a close what has become a terrifying competition to stop more people from suffering. As he is forced to adjust to the new rules, Gi-hun is pitted against the mysterious and calculating Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), whose allegiance is still shrouded in the uncertainty of Season 2. Will Gi-hun be able to exit the game successfully and how many people will die as he attempts this?
Responding to the comment regarding Squid Game, director Hwang Dong-hyuk is eager about what is to come. “Yes, I do have a lot on my plate, but promise you this – I will make it count,” Hwang said in an interview with Netflix in 2023.
Squid Game Season 1 provided viewers with the show’s eponymous deadly game where citizens are forced to gamble with their lives. In return, they may make a difference in the world with a life-altering cash reward or face disastrous consequences. Gi-hun, who is struggling with his life, will remain the main character of the show, and Season 2 starts where the shocking actions of Gi-hun were made in the final episode of Season 1.
“Season 2 asks how Gi-hun lives up to his threats after leaving the airport,” Hwang teases below in a new Season 1 retrospective clip. As it turns out, the focus on Season 2 remains with Gi-hun who tries to uncover their identities and their reasons for participating in the show.
Lee adds: For example, in the first season, it was possible to observe aspects of Gi-hun’s personality and his bright presentation. This time, the reader is provided with the emphasis on his persistence.

Why is Gi-hun back in the game?
As for the inciting incident of this article, yes, the teaser trailer is very explicit in indicating that Player 456 will be back in Squid Game. After meeting Lee, the actor portraying him, and the director, they all believe Gi-hun has a good reason for rejoining the game, which claims lives.
Andreas wants to return to a normal—a so-called normal life—despite the outings that force him into contact with others. Nevertheless, as Hwang pointed out during Netflix’s Fall Edit event in November, there is something inside him that has been fractured and cannot go back to the state in which the character was before. While Gi-hun wishes to see his daughter and establish a healthy relationship with her again, he knows … that he is now a different person … and it is no longer feasible to mend their relationship.
Essentially, all that is left for Gi-hun is to concentrate on the feral game that made him who he is today. “That is why I believe that character decides to return [to Squid Game], turn away [from his daughter], and begin this further journey,” Hwang elaborated.
While Gi-hun will be going back to wearing his tracksuit, Lee assures viewers that he is not the man from Season 1 anymore. Speaking about the shooting of the first season, the actor said: “I had many opportunities where I was able to express that goodness of heart in the character.” “But in Season 2 there are some scenarios when it is possible to see some fragments of that [quality] in him …I didn’t have that many opportunities.” Player 456 will return to Squid Game. The actor who plays him, Lee and director Hwang swear Gi-hun has a good reason for stepping back into the deadly competition.
“He wants to return to a ‘normal’ so-called life. [But] there’s something inside him that has already been broken where he cannot return to the way he was before,” Hwang said during Netflix’s Fall Edit event in November. Although Gi-hun yearns to reconnect with his daughter, “he understands … that he has changed in a way where [that’s] no longer possible.”
Gi-hun’s only recourse is to focus on the savage game that transformed him into the person he is now. “That is why I believe that character decides to return [to Squid Game], turn away from [his daughter], and begin this further journey,” Hwang explained.
Although Gi-hun will be putting his tracksuit back on, Lee is quick to remind us he’s not the same man he was in Season 1. “I had many opportunities where I was able to express that goodness of heart in the character [in Season 1],” the actor said. “However, in Season 2, while there are certain circumstances that allow for that [quality] to peek out of him … I didn’t have that many opportunities.”
You will have to wait for the next season this winter to see how this new version of Gi-hun approaches a challenge as dangerous as Squid Game.
