Sometimes, as much as you want revenge or to feel that you still care, the only thing that you can do is genuinely be happy for that person and wish them the best life even if you have dreams together in the past. That is the message that Petersen Vargas wants his viewers to grasp over his movie, Un/Happy for You. Speaking of love, the picture emphasizes that the phrase, ‘I love you,’ becomes an empty cliché once it is repeated or when people say it to each other, and in doing so causes more suffering rather than healing.
The movie shows viewers how spirited youthful romance is and how the circumstances of life alter it. Just like in any other romantic film, we immediately follow the life story of the two characters named Juancho and Zy portrayed by Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto respectively. Their relationship mirrors a common experience: love is like having a magical feeling at the very start we always dream of it and everything gets beautiful but when we grow up we have to become more responsible, and our dreams change so do our feelings. Most relationships face these challenges and therefore close doors due to challenges such as work, distance, and Coming from different backgrounds with different goals. “Un/Happy for You” illustrates how two people in love after passion and adoration can become jealous, obsessed, and hate for a lifetime.
The initial scenes of the film present the breakup as Juancho’s decision, thus making the audience sympathize with him and look at Zy as the wrongdoer. First of all, it is very easy to conclude that Juancho is an innocent and noble character, while Zy is the one who caused all their troubles. Earlier, we only got Belle’s side of the story but as the events progress, the audience learns more about Zy and the story becomes more complex. The movie is much more challenging than just an idea of who is right and who is wrong. It reminds us that love isn’t how long you can keep your partner, but how evenly you can bear the fact that one day you will have to leave.
The film also gets to induce strong emotions by using Moira dela Torre’s song called ‘Paubaya’ which was famous in 2021 and also starred JoshLia. The songs have a sad undertone and they enhance the movies emotion because most people associate the song with the break up of JoshLia’s relationship. This connection only enhances the scenes and adds to the film’s ability to make viewers feel emotions such as happiness and sadness. One other feature of Un/Happy for You is that it specifically emphasizes the Bicolano culture, especially in its food. Joshua Garcia’s character is a young chef, and he introduces Bicolano food into the mix, which also gives depth to the movie.
The intensity and saturation of the colors are shown in the characters’ emotions and the magnificent tastes of the meal strengthen the film. In fact, despite their breakup in real life, Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto popularly known as JoshLia still ignite palpable chemistry on the big screen. It makes their relationship feel very genuine and adds a certain spark to the film when they interact. The themes of friendship, first meeting, and love up to the bitter-sweet breakup are depicted in the movie naturally and believably.
Un/Happy for You deconstructs the concept of love and forces the viewers to rethink the notion that love is eternal. But it implies that real love may be in understanding when to leave and seeing the happiness in the other’s future with or without you. Directed by Theodore Betita, this movie was produced by ABS-CBN Studios, Star Cinema, and Viva Films and is set for showing on August 14 people who have ever been In love and faced the difficulties of breaking up or trying to get over it would find many similarities to themselves in the movie. It is a romantic drama that conveys feelings and emotions and tells the story of what happens next after a breakup.
Un/Happy for You Parents Guide Age Rating
Un/Happy for You is not rated because it has not undergone the official rating process by the Motion Picture Rating (MPA).
Sex & Nudity: It aims at depicting emotions and feelings that are mainly linked to Love and these include talks and scenes where Love turns into passion, hate, and jealousy. There are plenty of suggestions regarding sexual contact, but the movie does not contain scenes of actual sex. Some scenes animated something like kissing and affection between the main actors, Juancho and Zy. These scenes take place to depict some first steps towards becoming a couple and, in general, there is nothing that can be considered as shocking for the teen audience. There are hints that two of the characters may have been involved sexually but such action is not depicted in the movie instead the scenes are portrayed through dialogue.
Violence & Gore: Some scenes of the movie depict a series of temper tantrums, tears, and heartache as the characters part ways in the breakdown of their relationship. While there’s aggressive tension throughout most of the film, the aggression is not physical, so to speak, but emotional – referring to a breakup. The change of love in jealousy and obsession is depicted which may not be pleasant for the potential viewers most of whom are the young generation. This emotional conflict is reflected in loud screaming and conflicts.
Profanity: There may be instances of mild abuse of the vocal tract but they are not recurrent and thus not a theme in the movie. It might be with little emphasis on aggression but it’s there in the form of an emotional argument. Though, it is possible that there could be some scenes, that contain emotions like anger or frustration and some cursing might be thrown in.
Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking: There may be occasions when actors are observed to take alcohol, mostly in situations such as business meals or parties. These are employed to depict the character’s social lives and emotional conditions of the characters yet they are not portrayed to be as key events. This being a movie, I do wish to clear the air that the movie does not show any scenes of taking drugs or smoking.
