Thelma 2024 movie is Directed by Josh Margolin. The film stars June Squibb, Fred Hechinger, and Richard Roundtree with the rum time of 1h 37m theater released June 21, 2024.
Thelma stars June Squibb ( Nebraka) a 90-year-old nonagenarian widow, who can walk unsteadily but moves stubbornly and headstrong – Thelma is made of stock, she is a little wobbly but very determined: a tough cookie Thelma stands up for herself when some scammers who defraud her out of hundreds of dollars through a phone call that tricks her into believing that.
Daughter Gail (Parker Posey), the only family member to stick around, and her husband, Alan (Clark Gregg), just want it to be over – no one was killed – and the local detectives do not bat an eye when Thelma turns up to report the theft. Daniel is also getting acquainted with the troubles of his own life such as a break-up and pressure of parental overattention. In this case, Thelma convinces her longtime buddy but very unwilling Ben (Richard Roundtree of the Shaft films and TV series) to assist her in following the perpetrators and recovering her cash.
More surprisingly, the writer of this outstanding piece chose to utilize the fiction genre based on inspiration derived from the existence of the author-Margolin. Real-life has an adored grandmother who is quite a witty lady and who once received a call, claiming to be one of the family members in trouble with the police, only to find herself a victim of phone scammers who play on families’ close-knit bonds. Perhaps because he wanted to protect his Thelma from a similar real fate, Margolin proceeded to paint the picture of a Hollywood-like scene where his lady could get her well-deserved happy ending as well as the crook serve his due time behind bars. Although a lot of distortions and inventions are to be observed in the resultant movie, one must admire Margolin’s passion for his grandmother in the way his senior heroine is portrayed.
With great regret, the elder is depicted as a victim in a movie or silly and undoubtedly too old in another movie. Thelma rejects this ageist trope and Grumpy Old Men, its eponymous female character is depicted as a woman full of life and freedom, who has no patience for the painful details of her MedicAlert bracelet which she has been wearing since her severe heart attack. All her “friends are dead,” but she has words of wisdom for the spoilt grandson Daniel: ‘Look at Tom Cruise you always have to learn to fall and always land on your feet’.
With this lighthearted but humorous lead-in to this rum-shaking, chair-swiveling cross-generational in-between-space, Margolin provides a nice sense of who Thelma is on your average day. Until the day when a curved call appears on her phone screen, we also see an interesting activity as, despite disabilities that prevent her from walking, she walks through Los Angeles to find scammers. They create a sense of an ordinary good-cop-bad-cop situation, Thelma, who revels in disobeying the law, and retired cop Ben, who spends his days in a warm nursing home. Yes, that is until Thelma decides to kick him into action again.
The friendly nature that Squibb has with Roundtree is like they have been friends for a long time but are only working together in The A-Team. She’s that grandmother too – a passionate and feisty one that it’s sooner or later, admit that the place has been missing my own Tita. (It was funny when Monica was something of a Thelma to him when he said: he’s a man who’s earned his retirement but age has not taken his daring and compassion away from him. ) Collectively, they perform abysmally mock action sequences that are memorable though as low stakes as they are, such as the suspenseful encounter with the legendary Malcolm McDowell. Amid this senior-specific action, there are great one-liners, like Thelma’s insistence that she can figure out how to use a stolen gun: >” How much stress can there be? These morons are using them all”
The characters in Thelma are like the old Man of the poem by Shel Silverstein – The Little Boy and the Old Man, where the misery of being old and the joys of being young are depicted as the same. At the beginning of the film, both Thelma and the 24-year-old Daniel are overlooked by Gail and @lan, whose kindness while raising their children can be regarded as the same breathed in = being overprotected. And both feel that they are lost, they can not determine the future that the next chapter can hold. But inspired by Tom Cruise and his determination to do his Mission of allowing the impossible to be done, Thelma and Daniel discover that one can be his/her hero.
Finally, Thelma turns into laughter while jokes about aging, not old people. When there are elements made concerning senility or otherwise, ailment associated with aging, Thelma and her friends are not subjects of such comedy. We all are. Audiences can easily find solace in their struggles, and despite the film’s dark themes, it never becomes depressing; there is a distinct sense of optimism in the film’s tone, coupled with its primarily light color scheme. These heroes may stumble, but like the famous actor and filmmaker Tom Cruise, they may get up and continue being an inspiration to people again. Backed up with some mild action thrills like flips, high jinks, stuff throws, shoots, bangs, and a blast, Thelma is far from just a charming romp. It’s a real thrill.
Thelma 2024 Parents Guide Age Rating
Thelma is Rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Rating (MPA) for Strong Language.
Thelma speaks about the fear of losing one’s independence and the need to rely on someone or something else; it is an old woman’s battle. It discusses subjects like the elderly being scammed, but it doesn’t bring up creepy or very ominous examples. It means that the film conveys the messages of power and the people’s need to fight for themselves, thus assigned to a 13+ audience.
Violence and Gore: The movie contains rather light scenes of action that show how Thelma and Ben try to lure scammers and become rather intense, creating suspense. However, these scenes are not as graphic as those depicted in serious mob movies as the focus is made on the comic aspects of the plot without excessive use of violence. It is still a non-threatening, or at least misunderstood, type of situation and there are cases when the kid or a stolen gun makes an appearance.
Profanity: From the examined scenes, it can be seen that only powernormative mild language is now and then used in the film. There’s no usage of highly abusive language, thus, presenting a fairly decent and safe environment free of any elements that would warrant a higher rating like R or NC-17. Some of the dramatic sequences cover such topics as scams and confrontations, but all of them are viewed in a comical tone. There are no scenes that would make the viewer scared; at most, the movie’s frightening items or situations are downplayed and are made amusing or comical most of the time.
Alcohol, Drugs, and Smoking: Some of the characters are portrayed as drinking sometimes but there is no instance where the characters are related to taking drugs or smoking. This aspect remains marginal and perfunctory and rarely a focus of the conflict or drama.
Sex and Nudity: In regards to the portrayal of sex there is no material in the film that contains sexuality at all completely ruling out any possibility of the younger teens and above to feel uncomfortable watching this movie.
