The Instigators is a 2024 action and Thriller Movie Directed by Doug Liman. The film stars Matt Damon, Casey Affleck, and Hong Chau, with a runtime of 1h 41m, and was released on August 02, 2024.
I was convinced that Doug Liman could not produce a worse movie than “Road House,” which is a shallow, exaggerated replica of the original 80s action film. With ‘The Instigators,’ his second film of the year, he succeeds in making Matt Damon, with whom he previously worked in the Bourne series, entirely charmless, turning this into one of the actor’s least-loved films. Sadly, this heist flick underwritten by Apple TV is boring, dull, repetitive, stale, and completely lacking any tension. I almost feel that it is wrong to write too much about it because this lifeless trash does not cause such stains on the white paper.
Right from the onset, the disjointed narrative by Casey Affleck and Chuck MacLean turned ‘The Instigators into a tedious affair. The retired Marine Rory (Damon) and an alcoholic Cobby (Affleck) are two stiffs assigned with the hot-headed Scalvo (Jack Harlow) by local Boston crime boss Mr. Besegia (Michael Stuhlbarg) and Richie Dechico (Alfred Molina).
The current mayor of the city, Mayor Micceli (Ron Perlman), has an opponent in Mark Choi (Ronnie Cho). Micceli’s two bosses believe that he is going to win as usual by a large margin of votes. Naturally, there will be money at his victory party where you have to pay your way in. This seemingly simple task proves to be disastrous as Micceli loses, and Rory and Cobby have to escape from the heist with nothing but their hands. The only thing of value is a chain worn by Micceli, which contains a combination of a safe. The pathetic mayor sends out Frankie (Ving Rhames), a police officer, to capture Rory and Cobby. The two jump across the city, inadvertently kidnapping Rory’s therapist, Dr. Donna Rivera (Hong Chau). However, the premise is wafer-thin, even if the writers have assembled what can only be described as an A-list cast.
“The Instigators” must be the most reprehensible and highly unimaginable sin of not giving every single actor in the show the utilization that they deserve. Stuhlbarg comes in with an authentic accent and pretty much vanishes, like Molina, third of the film. Supporting characters include Paul Walter Hauser as a fixer and Toby Jones as the mayor’s lawyer, and they barely qualify as cameos since they have little to no involvement in the story. All characters are rather one-dimensional, and both leads do not escape this rule. As we are provided with some complicated work-related and family-related reasons why Rory and Cobby, correspondingly, require money, those stakes are not experienced during the film.
This time, the script tries to pull a rather unconvincing love/sexual triangle with Rory, Cobby, and Dr. Rivera — Cobby and the doctor find ways to make out or something. The film is not well-lit and instead relies on heavy saturation. The needle drops are perhaps the trickiest I have ever come across in my entire life. The lyrics of “Ball of Confusion,” “People moving out, people moving in/Why, because of the color of their skin,” accompany Rory and Cobby’s drive to a luxurious beach house (if this is some form of humor, Damon and Affleck do a poor job at presenting it). ‘Downtown’ effectively initiates a fast car race. “Jump Around” provides music to a group of people running behind flying dollars like in Kubrick’s ‘The Killing’. The song selection is haphazard, and for a moment, one gets a feeling that Liman forgot the music was on shuffle mode on Spotify.
None of this is helped by Affleck simply being miscast. When he should be a perfect fit for the sullen, sarcastic Cobby, he simply leaches the energy out of the script’s witty repartee. Cobby and Rory aren’t the most beloved (or well-developed) characters either. Damon attempts to employ his familiar smarminess, but it falls flat due to a clumsy scripting of scenes and an appalling lack of chemistry between him and Affleck. Perhaps in a far superior movie, they would be a great match. But in such a fatally flawed project, one can only wish that Ben Affleck was opposite his good friend Damon.
This, in fact, is a buddy movie designed to resemble a Coen brothers comedy that has no humor in it. There is no fun for ‘The Instigators. ’The heists themselves are not compelling or flashy, or even the process of planning these heists feels like more of a chore than an enchantment. The spectacle is reduced to cheap VFX. Stunts and car chases are quite unrealistic and often are cut poorly. Not surprisingly, the bracelet is yet another boring plot device or the MacGuffin, as it is commonly referred to in the cinema industry. The film goes around in circles, can hardly care less about its characters, and seems, in general, to want nothing more than to make its audience doze off. ”The Instigators” elicits no scenes of recall, passion, humor, or wisdom. At most, it is a moving picture show.
