The Carpenter is a 2023 Action Movie directed by Garrett Batty and written by Garrett Batty, Kameron Krebs, and Kenny Krebs. The film stars Kameron Krebs, Kaulin Krebs, and Daz Crawford and will be released on November 1, 2024. It has a runtime of 1 hour 52 minutes.
The Carpenter is a unique movie that answers a question many might not have thought to ask: what if you put the aggressive action of MMA fighting and add a strong religious element to it? These two worlds clash in a movie directed by Garrett Batty where it at the same time is an action movie and a movie that shows the main character on a spiritual path. The movie takes place in 29 AD and it focuses on the life of a young man called Oren who is soon to undergo a monumental shift.
Oren, portrayed by Kameron Krebs, is a talented boxer competing in MMA-style fights before the spectators who enjoy the atmosphere of brawl and lawful stakes. His older brother Levi is there to support him, and Oren can become a winner or win matches, and the show is good enough to captivate even the harshest critics such as a Roman guard who recommends that Oren should turn professional in Nazareth. However, back at the house, Oren and Levi realize that their father has been injured in a fall. His last words are asking them to look after your mother and to go to Nazareth where they can live with your Uncle Sharar.
In Nazareth, Uncle Sharar, portrayed by Daz Crawford, operates a well-established fighting club. He notices Oren’s talent and believes he could act as a champion for their town in a Jerusalem contest. It is the most appropriate direction for Oren’s character, but his story takes a twist when he is pursued by Roman soldiers. Oren stumbles into a nearby marketplace area in an attempt to escape and destroys in the process. He seeks refuge on a stranger’s lawn and comes across a good Samaritan in the person of Jeff Dickamore, who agrees to settle Oren’s debt for the property. Yeshua is more than just a friendly face—he’s also a carpenter and offers to mentor Oren in his craft, and even teaches him how to think differently about life.
As Oren prepares himself for the showdown in the ring, he is not only being taught the art of fighting alone. Yeshua tutors him on carpentry and life lessons on the beauty of not being heartless and thinking big in life. Oren also learns a lot of things about love, especially with some advice on how to go about courting Mira, a girl he intends to date as portrayed by Aurora Florence. At this point, Oren is given a chance to choose between a violent existence and embracing fatherhood.
From the beginning, it is evident that The Carpenter does not fall into the category of faith-based films. While most religious stories revolve around faith and hope, The Carpenter is unique because it pairs faith with MMA fighting. Yes, there are some tough scenes involving fights but they are not quite violent, and the picture does not show much blood. It is a movie that any parent who is looking for a movie that he or she can watch together with children or any MMA enthusiast who is looking for an encouraging story can watch.
There is some action in this film but this movie is not attempting to copy the Gladiator in the Bible style. For Oren, the stakes are lower, and he engages in warfare not to gain fame and adoration but because of his love for the game and the serenity he gets from practicing. His uncle Sharar also stresses fairness and also the fact that one can learn important lessons in life during cage fighting.
So for those who did not get acquainted with religious films, Yeshua is another name for Jesus. He not only teaches him how to be a better fighter but also imparts values and religious beliefs to Oren, reminding Oren that he is more than a fighter. Yeshua also does not immediately fix Oren’s scar but instead tries to teach him to become a better person and learn why things like pain and hardships exist.
Final Thoughts
Overall, one cannot fail to appreciate the invention of combining MMA with Jesus’ life story in The Carpenter. While it is not exactly telling a story of faith in the usual sense, it is doing it entertainingly and safely is suitable for children, which is just as exciting and meaningful. Some may find the soundtrack a bit excessive but overall the movie is entertaining with a nice theme. In the game of narrative cinema, The Carpenter is a welcome breather from the regular fare of vulgarity, boisterousness, and pyrotechnics; it is wholesome family entertainment in its best form.
