Well, to be honest, I’ve never figured out why some people do not enjoy animated movies. When watching Robot Dreams, I was able to conclude that even the language we use regarding animation reduces its significance. The rules always dictate what animation can do, but a live-action movie cannot, such as developing fabulous worlds and more fantasies. This is good, and most of the animated films I love are like this. But, as Guillermo del Toro once stated, it is not right to call animation a genre exclusively for children.
Robot Dreams is based on a 2007 graphic novel by Sara Varon, who shares her last name with the movie’s main character, a dog named Dog Varon. Dog Varon lives in a small apartment on East 13th Street in a bustling city filled with talking animals of all kinds. His life is pretty boring, ending each day with a microwaved mac-and-cheese meal. He needs a friend. After seeing a TV commercial, he decided to order a robot called the Amica 2000. This robot needs to be assembled, but once it’s put together, it becomes the Dog’s special friend. Although the Robot doesn’t know its strength and has some clumsy moments at first, Dog is patient. They have fun together, especially rollerblading in Central Park to the song “September” by Earth, Wind & Fire, which fits perfectly as the film’s anthem.
As Dog and Robot explore the many streets and places in New York City, Robot Dreams is filled with lots of small details that bring the story to life without any dialogue. The movie uses a clean, 2D animation style that looks like its graphic novel origin. It’s visually pleasing and has many fun touches, like a chimpanzee president on a newspaper front page (since the story is set in the Reagan era) and a hot dog cart run by a wiener dog. There are also little nods to things from the past that older viewers might recognize, like Gayla kites, and playful references to classic films like Jaws and Buster Keaton’s Steamboat Bill, Jr.
The fun and happy first part of Robot Dreams turns more melancholic when Dog and Robot go to Ocean Beach and get separated. The robot gets stuck in a place where the Dog can’t reach him, and it will be months before the Dog can try to rescue him. During this time, the Robot dreams (or maybe daydreams?) about being reunited with the Dog. Meanwhile, Dog tries to cope with Robot’s absence, waiting for the day they can be together again. Both Dog and Robot find moments of happiness and relief from their loneliness, but these moments don’t last long — not like the strong bond they shared.
As you watch Robot Dreams, you’ll hope that Dog and Robot find a happy ending, even though the world around them has different plans. A wonderful thing about the movie is that it shows how unexpected events and changes in life can lead to discoveries and people who bring new meaning to life. Despite the sad moments, Robot Dreams is ultimately optimistic. Even the most heartbreaking parts of the story lead to a hopeful future. Whether Dog and Robot reunite or not, the movie makes you feel that they will always be connected by the time they spend together.
As it draws to a close, Robot Dreams’ exquisite animation succeeds not only in depicting the love between Dog and Robot but also the feelings of everyone in the story, however briefly and tangentially they may intersect Dog and Robot. In general, Robot Dreams is a story about the significance of friendship and the relationships that people develop that cannot be ruined by the flow of time as well as the distances that might occur between friends. People continue living their lives, while their one meaningful experience continues to be significant even if it becomes part of a memory.
Robot Dreams Parents Guide Age Rating
“Robot Dreams” is not rated because it has not gone through the official rating process by the MPAA.
Language: In the film, there are no characters who verbally communicate with each other – the audience must rely solely on visual images as well as the parts of the score that contain lyrics. This makes it possible for anyone to view it because there is no disgusting language or hard words spoken in it. There is, of course, no dialogue which makes people look for other clues and thus the storyline becomes easier to dissect.
Violence: There is no violence or intense scenes in “Robot Dreams. ” The whole atmosphere of this type of show is rather unimpassioned and very quiet. The only moments that can be called possibly tension building are when the Dog is separated from the Robot and it is not done menacingly at all. This means that the movie does not contain any scenes of horror or unpleasant scenes that hinder the possibility of children and even adults watching the movie.
Scary Scenes: A possibility that was distressing to those young audiences was the passion of the two characters, Dog and Robot when they parted ways. Love and relationships are however derived from two families, and major themes such as loneliness and separation are depicted throughout the film in a very sensitive manner and this might cause emotional distress to the young kids. Nonetheless, these scenes are essential to the whole plot of the narrative and are contrasted with the messages of hope and perseverance since they should better be read for children, starting at 10 years old.
Sexual Content: To my relief, there is no sexual scene in “Robot Dreams. ” In fact, “Robot Dreams” is about friendship, where Dog and Robot are friends. This lack of any overture of a romantic or sexual nature is also a contributing factor of ensuring that the content is appropriate for children thus making it a kids-friendly movie.
Substance Use: In this movie, there are no scenes in which characters drink alcoholic beverages, use drugs, or smoke. This makes it very safe for children and family-oriented shows to watch without having to worry about biting and violent behaviors.
