My Penguin Friend is a 2024 movie directed by David Schurmann. The cast also features Jean Reno, Adriana Barraza, and Rochi Hernández, with a 1h 37M runtime, and will be released on August 16, 2024.

The movie has been adapted from the real-life incident of a Brazilian fisherman named João Pereira de Souza in 2011 when he saved an oil spill-affected Magellanic penguin. After losing his best friend in a fatal accident, João starts getting lost and miserable but slowly starts to live for something as he takes care of the wounded penguin, which he named DinDim, which means ice pop. And when the bird returns to the water, the two may never be together again. However, DinDim has other plans and, with the help of GPS-like skills, covers 5,000 miles to get back to the person who rescued him. DinDim continued to come at the same time every other year. This is a truly inspiring tale, one that depicts the singular bond between man and nature. João has a wife portrayed by Adriana Barraza as Blue Beetle, who is not happy initially when João develops so much affection for the animal.

Synopsis: My Penguin Friend may be a beautiful family movie, but this time, a confused dad and one cute little penguin find happiness in the family and regain everyone’s strength with complete loyalty to overcoming the sea. Former fisherman João – the main character of the movie, acted by Jean Reno – was a man who wanted to stay out of society after a tragedy. But when he observes a lonely penguin floating in the middle of a vast sea covered with oil, he immediately feels the urge to rescue the struggling creature. Worse still, instead of buying tiny squid for the washed-up turtle to take to sea as his wife (Adriana Barraza, Oscar nominee) pleads with him to do, he is also the foster dad to a flightless bird.

Thus, for the first time in years, João can feel joy even though he cannot begin to comprehend exactly what sort of bond is now being forged. And as the penguin swims back out to the boundless sea, João feels he could never see the friend again. But no matter how far the penguin gets in Antarctica, he becomes a protagonist in his comedy of errors that centres on a series of escapades aimed at using his supposed homing-like device powers to get him back to where he now calls home. Like the movies mentioned before, it is an emotional story based on the events that stunned the global audience and filmed in the beautiful landscapes of Brazil and Argentina. My Penguin Friend is the tale that floats in the sea, the miracles of nature, and love.
