MadS is a 2024 HORROR Movie directed by David Moreau. The film stars Xiomara Melissa Ahumada Quito, Lucille Guillaume, and Laurie Pavy, with a runtime of 1h 26M, and was released on October 18, 2024.
The plot revolves around Romain, or as portrayed in the film Milton Riche, a young man who wants to enjoy his birthday. He just wants to have a good time, let loose, and go out with his girlfriend Anais, played by the lovely and talented Laurie Pavy. However, to our horror, things do not stay festive for long.
It begins when Romain goes out to visit his dealer to buy some substances and pick up his friend from the process. He is only 5 minutes away when he suddenly comes across a woman who is fleeing the woods. This woman, whom I am going to refer to as Patient Zero, is wearing a hospital gown and she has a lot of bandages on her body that make her look like someone who just fled from something terrifying. It’s quite obvious now that she needs assistance.
Romain, however, is not exactly in the best position to call the police, since he is a drug carrier. He is concerned about the growing hype and does not wish to be at the center of the focus; therefore, instead of calling the police, he consents to take Patient Zero to the nearest hospital. But things go wrong. One day while in the car, she gets a screwdriver from the glovebox and surprises Romain by instantly ‘killing’ herself in front of him while he is seated in the car’s passenger seat.
Romain is suddenly sent into a state of confusion, worry, and fear. Ideally, he is high and mighty, terror-stricken and bewildered. Following that terrifying encounter in his automobile, he comes to a reckless decision: to drive home and bury Patient Zero in his garage. This triggers a nightmarish experience that is only bound to worsen with the passage of the specific night.
When Romain drinks he begins a downward spiral and his night only gets worse. The movie began with the birthday celebration, but the evening quickly transformed into a night filled with fun and terror. And the death of Patient Zero is just the first step in this tale. Later on, Romain is chased after by a SWAT team and the instructions given to them are to shoot him dead on sight.
This brings us to the last innovation that sets MadS apart from other series: camera work. It is a one-situation film, and the entire movie is filmed in one single continuous scene. It means that there are no transitions, no analyzing time, and no time for a breather, and the viewers follow Romain as everything crumbles down in front of him. This single-shot technique contributes to the film’s tense feeling since you are immersed in the mayhem without any breaks. The story progresses smoothly and does not leave space for boredom.
The scenes are shot well with no jolts to accentuate the wild scavenger hunt of destruction going on all over the city. Every individual character and occurrence is connected, providing the film with a sense of urgency and continuity.
Thus, “MadS” combines elements of the feature film within the Found Footage genre with the anticipation of a Halloween event. Often, there are shootings, chases, fights, and other key elements that create the film’s atmosphere, invigorating the audience’s interest. It is not a movie like The Sixth Sense where there is a major plot twist but the anticipation and suspense are all that counts. Well, you just have to wait for the roller coaster ride.
The strength of “MadS” lies in how it is a work that knows what it wants to say and how it wants to say it. The decision to shoot the entire play in one continuous shot is not just for the aesthetics; it is employed effectively to build suspense and keep the audience on their toes. In addition, the movie is an exciting ride with many moments that are escaping-inspired and typical for horror flicks, so it is perfect for viewers who enjoy thrillers and movies featuring horrific scenes and concepts.
This movie is fantastic, and the effort that was put into making it is amazing. Filming a single take involves great coordination along with the right timing and “MadS” does it successfully. It is almost like viewing non-stop action, and the movie never slows down at any point. Stepping by step, it feels as though the movie is a relentless car chase that only concludes with the end credits.
It premiered at Fantastic Fest 2024 and, as of October 18, it can be seen on Shudder. The movie “MadS” is a creation of David Moreau. If you are in search of a movie that is unique, adventurous, and completely crazy then this is a film that is not to be missed.
