Ezra 2024 movie is Directed by Tony Goldwyn. The film stars Tony Goldwyn, Robert De Niro, and Vera Farmiga with a rum time of 1h 40m theater released May 31, 2024.
I prefer movies where there are hero characters, who are not ideal heroes. Characters with negative aspects are interesting to read; therefore, such characters are preferred in writing. It is boring to watch movies in which all characters are ideal and act appropriately all the time. This is why I had high expectations from the recently released movie ‘Ezra.’
Max is a stand-up comic played by the versatile Bobby Cannavale who, in this film, seems to have anger management problems. He does not manage his interpersonal relationships so well which is manifested through his affective relationship with his ex-wife, Jenna played by Rose Byrne who happens to be Cannavale’s spouse in real life as well as his affectionate affair with a man named Bruce played by Tony Goldwyn who also directed the film. Max also evidently fails as a father, for his son Ezra, although this is not a very central element of the subplot in the story.
Ezra has autism, and of course, this only multiplies all the difficulties. An escalating conflict between Max and Jenna causes the boy to have problems at school and they can’t decide on how to solve the problem. In terms of parenting style, Jenna appears to have positive interactions with Ezra, and she is well aware of how to establish boundaries for her child, while Max’s approach is hardly similar to that. One night, Max persuades Ezra to take him home after watching a movie he chooses but instead of that, he exposes Ezra to Comedy Club so that he may catch the attention of a comedian, a producer at Jimmy Kimmel’s show. This plan just does not work at all, in any way for Max’s professional advancement or his and Ezra’s personal life.
It gets even worse when Ezra hears Bruce talking about Max and touches a raw nerve about his dad getting into some kind of trouble. The boy named Ezra escapes, gets lost in traffic, and, unfortunately, is hit by a car. This could have been averted if the character involved in the conflict had invested their time in effective communication. After the accident, Max behaves erratically, loses custody of his son, and abducts Ezra, fleeing to the West. Of course, with Max, it is not considered kidnapping at all.
You might easily imagine how the story unfolded further. I expected wiser scenes than that: the movie is full of scenes that could not be created in real life. For example, an Amber Alert for Ezra creates a perfect opportunity for Max and Ezra to hear it while they are in the convenience store. Suddenly Ezra, who keeps having problems with metal spoons and not getting hugged, can eat with metal spoons and forge hugs after turning a few days. These changes, however, appeared fake and, at best, unauthentic.
The plot of the film is trying to tell the audience a lesson about people with certain imperfections having certain undesirable actions. Sometimes it can be effective in movies, but here, it is not. Max causes Ezra to be jeopardized, gets high while caring for him, and scares Jenna which makes him seem irresponsible. In the third act, there is a significant scene where Stan, grandpa of Ezra, played by Robert De Niro, attempts to give some justification to Max’s actions and again it seems forced and does not fit in the scheme of things.
Even though one can appreciate the acting and some of the scenes, “Ezra” turns out to be as reckless and irresponsible as the protagonist. The Jimmy Kimmel try-hard gag during the credit also still fails to bring anything to the table. On the whole, the plot possesses potential, though it largely lacks intelligent or realistic ideas.
Ezra Parents Guide Age Rating
Ezra rated is R for its depiction of drug use, frequent strong language, and some sexual references.
Ezra is not suitable for all ages owing to themes of substance abuse, crude language, and references to sexual content. Due to this, the movie depicts complicated situations and imperfect characters or personalities, making the movie most suitable for teenagers of seventeen years and above or mature audiences. Parents should screen the movie first before allowing their children to watch the movie due to some violent and sensitive scenes.
Drug Use: It contains several scenes of drug use. Throughout the film, the principal character, Max, is depicted engaging in the use of marijuana and even getting high. These scenes are realistic and depict Max as being reckless especially when he is expected to be caring for his young son Ezra. This might be considered as a negative impact on the youth and probably should be discussed with parents about the risks and outcomes of drug abuse.
Some Sexual References: There is a little sexual language and jokes in the movie, so parents should be cautious about letting their children watch it. Although these references are not very direct, they were conceived for adults. These are things like comments and jokes that characters make which may be seen as sexual harassment. These could be considered vulgar or offensive to young people who might not comprehend the content.
Language: we see characters often use strong language throughout the movie. This includes the use of expressions such as various forms of cursing and swear words. It is used in dramatic or passionate scenes when the characters are annoyed or faced with challenges. It is thus important for parents to be prepared that the language will be used frequently and may not be appropriate for children or young teenagers.
Violence: However, there is no extreme violence in the film, there are some scenes that might be rather provocative. Interestingly, Ezra is run over by a car; this scene is depicted in such a manner that viewers understand that it is not a minor accident. Some aspects of the show, such as the consequences of the accident and the emotional states of the characters, are rather traumatic and might be disturbing for people with a sensitive disposition.
