Despicable Me 4 is a 2024 animation movie Directed by Chris Renaud and Patrick Delage. The film stars Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, and Will Ferrell with a rum time of 1h 35m theater released July 03, 2024.
Seven years have passed since the last “Despicable Me” movie, and the only thing that’s changed in Gru’s world is the addition of another child, Gru Jr., who’s the spitting image of his dad: hook-nosed, shifting eyes, short head — just with slightly more hair. The conception of a biological son to a family of three adopted daughters, let alone a company of out-of-control Minions, would be tension enough for ‘Despicable Me 4’, but whatever conflict the newborn might bring is revealed superficially in Illumination’s busy sequel. Sometimes, it is a strange series of Looney Tunes-y shorts stacked on top of the other much like a tiered wedding cake.
In comes the returning director Chris Renaud and wedges in a new villain, a teenage protégé, several trips to Gru’s old school, a heist – to nab a menacing honey badger, and a rushed attempt at placing the family in witness protection program (yes, you can imagine Gru silently panicking as he tries to go undercover as a regular country club dadd<|reserved_special_token_251|>. And that gives the character almost no room for the type of vulnerability that has been this series’ charm since the first film was released in 2010. While Andy stretched into adolescence in parallel with millions of children who grew up in front of their television sets and then computer monitors watching “Toy Story”, Gru and Minions do not get a day older or any more compelling in each film.
However, one might reasonably ask what contributions ‘Despicable Me 4’ makes toward comprehending these characters. What it does add is merely more characters to a brand’s ever-expanding cast – some of which like Poppy Prescott the aspiring supervillain played by Joey King could well star in solo chapters in the future. On the other hand, screenwriters, Ken Daurio and Mike White are virtually forced to emphasize the Minions … one cannot complain. The talking, farting gimmick is probably the most lovable character that has been crafted under the studio of Illumination and although they had two phenomenal movies that are entirely based around them, they take the spotlight again here (and their funny, child-like bumbling babbling still voiced by Pierre Coffin).
Initially, the Anti-Villain League chief, Silas Ramsbottom (Steve Coogan), briefs Gru on the fact that his arch-nemesis from his boarding school days is out for him. Uttering the power of a cockroach to become an evil-doer, a new antagonist Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) vows to capture and take control of Gru’s baby. The whole family has to be put into hiding and the AVL comes in to capture almost all the minions leaving only three. Clad in radiation suits, Silas uses a device to blast five of the yellow buggers with what appears to be radiation; they then emerge to possess new powers: stretching and smashing (Tim and Dave) Chomping, and Floating (Jerry and Gus). Pepper attends, and a one-eyed X-Minion gets his visor like Cyclops and can shoot a laser right through the Earth.
These are the Mega Minions, which are present in the movie and timely provide laughs in terms of mini skits. But again, making them appear as one of those decisions that must be thought of as creating a fourth “Despicable Me. ”It’s well beyond trilogy level now, and one would assume there are even more in the years to come. For the new mutant Minions, the question arises – are we going to have them in the next movies?‘’Ah, c’mon, I’m sick of superheroes,’ an old lady exclaimed when the Mega Minions, who lack basic intelligence and are as clumsy as amoebas almost destroyed the city. Of course, you know what might be quite entertaining to offer this Minion as a superpower? Intelligence.
The twist here is that despite Mega Minion upgrading five of them, all of them are still as incompetent as the rest of the herd implying several fun references to spoof the superhero genre. But audiences could just as easily be shouting, “I’m tired of Minions!” The googly-eyed merch monsters seem to be everywhere these days, and by waiting seven years for this sequel, Illumination is now courting audiences who weren’t even alive when Despicable Me 3 came out. The mature humor is in four quadrants, appeals to the families, and sweeps out all the villains the franchise had before, thus, it will attract that difficult young adult group by using nostalgia and bringing them back to a brand they have grown out of.
However, it is regrettable that the film’s story team did not attempt to age up the three daughters of Gru, that is Margo, Edith, and Agnes. It also would have been amusing to see how both Gru and Lucy manage them when the girls enter adolescence, which might have been another way of engaging loyal viewers whose own characters are gradually developing too. True, the franchise of “Despicable Me” has always been full of laughter and cheerful stickers, so it is not quite logical to start with the fourth part. However, it does not have a specific purpose of its being (other than the most primitive – making money).
Of course, considering that the film is simply good fun, I am sure it has to be worth something … and it is. Where the other leading computer animation studios aim for an emotional response, Illumination is content with laughter, and there’s plenty in “Despicable Me 4. ” Maxime, voiced by Ferrell, infuses the character with a fake French accent which is not as thick as Gru’s Slavic one but thick enough. Just wait ‘ till your ears hear the two of them sing together (whereas that grates, the new tunes in franchise tune setter Pharrell feel energizing, and the needle drops mix well with it). As Maxime’s big-lipped girlfriend Valentina, sofía Vergara gives one of the better voice performances in the movie. There are also entertaining performances by Stephen Colbert and Chloe Fineman as Gru’s new neighbors.
Finally, the action gets so complex that one can hardly trace all the details in succession and coordinate them. What is the use of planning this big cockroach siege if the bugs do not arrive to support Maxime for instance? On the one hand, Gru is free from the misery of babysitting his hench creatures; on the other hand, it is equally ambiguous as to what type of influence he wants to bring into his son’s life. One thing is certain: Some of these characters are not gone just yet and perhaps some of them should not be seen in the next sequel — Mega Minions for instance are not as adorable as the name suggests.
