Descendants: The Rise of Red (2024) movie is Directed by Jennifer Phang. The film stars Kylie Cantrall, Malia Baker, and Rita Ora. with a rum time of 1h 31m theater released July 12, 2024.
Descendants: The Rise of Red is the latest in the Descendants movie franchise by Disney which is loved by many. This new version is a sequel or a new production of a new batch of youngsters in the series but is true to the original movies that made the first set of youngsters or children who now are teenagers, giddy with the films again.
This year marks nine years since fans first saw the villain kids from the Isle of the Lost disrupting Auradon Prep, and a lot has happened since, including the introduction of a new protagonist, Chloe (Malia Baker), and a new antagonist, Red (Kylie Cantrall). Descendants: The Rise of Red builds on the series ever so slightly past the time frame of Descendants 3, where Mal (Dove Cameron) and Ben (Mitchell Hope) have embarked on their adventures, while a new principal in town is Uma (China Anne McClain), daughter of Ursula.
However, whether it was good or bad depending on their emotionally sensitive past is an interesting plot itself, although not the subject here. The new movie familiarises Disney fans with the wicked daughter of the Queen of Hearts from Wonderland, portrayed by the gifted Rita Ora who holds a lifelong vendetta against Auradon and her former bosom friend Cinderella portrayed by the lovely singer and actress Brandy. And when Red is invited to study at Auradon, there is a sudden flash of idea – and she takes revenge and stirs the rebellion. But Red can only hitch a ride with Cinderella’s obsessive-compulsive daughter Chloe when they go back in time to change the Queen of Hearts’ evil angle.
This movie is like any other Disney’s but the young actors and actresses bring out the best in that story and make it advance. As for the Descendants franchise, they’ve never looked like they’ve been afraid to try different kinds of music for their soundtracks, ranging from It’s Goin’ Down, Did I Mention, and Queen of Mean all attempting different musical styles – and so, The Rise of Red is no different.
In some of the opening scenes, Kylie Cantrall and Rita Ora are singing a duet we can be confident that Hollywood’s Disney movies are coming back to their former glory, allowing new faces to share the billing with more seasoned veterans. It is not only Cantrall’s vocals that captivate the audience but also the latter’s acting chops, which emerge during the progressive journey of Red’s character, where her transformation and growth are akin to Mal’s in every movie as she transforms with every obstacle she encounters.
Chloe, depicted as overly cheerful by Malia Baker, also follows the same path but once the two come together, it sends the message of friendship regardless of how different one is from the other. Nevertheless, getting to know other characters, particularly those in the movie, makes Chloe transform from a rule-following royal daughter to a girl who bends rules to make a stand at times. However, they are not the only characters in the foreground in The Rise of Red, which introduces Dara Reneé as Uliana, the sea witch Ursula’s younger sister, who will most certainly evoke memories of Uma before she leaves the villainous image behind.
Although Reneé, Ruby Rose Turner, and Morgan Dudley do not have as much screen time in the movie as other characters, their presence is felt, and if there is another sequel, let’s hope Disney welcomes those legends back! As Red and Chloe are searching for information about what happened to Bridget (Ruby Rose Turner) to turn into the Queen of Hearts, we understand that Uliana played an important role in this, and the number of teenagers at the climax of the movie will impress the viewers. Like all other Descendants films, the outfits are great, with every character having so much more to say, and much of that can be said through color, which allows viewers to discover a little bit more about them.
More Parental Movies:
Red’s style incorporates various shades of the colour red, there are hearts as a reference to the Queen of Hearts even if Red doesn’t want to own up to her royalty. It also helps that Chloe is the daughter of Cinderella and Prince Charming; her colors are predominantly white and royal blue, symbolizing her innocence compared to Red. However, despite these clashes of colours, they do blend well, just like their characters do. Descendants: The Rise of Red is a pleasant surprise to add more to the Descendants franchise that shows it can deliver the same messages as the original movies and with new characters. If one watches with fresh eyes and perspectives the Descendants films, then the strong acting from each actor, apart from their singing, will have the viewer at the edge of their seat.
