In a Violent Nature, the 2024 movie is Directed by Chris Nash. The film stars Ry Barrett, Andrea Pavlovic, and Cameron Love with the rum time of 1h 34m theater released May 31, 2024.
One of the most captivating trends in films is the character that does not feel the need to overact or be a hero, they do their thing. Their daily schedule and commitment can be described as virtually infallible over time. Just like Matthew Modine in “Vision Quest” or Willem Dafoe in “The Florida Project,” they get up and continue with what they do, and in the process they become admirable.
Now, try to picture this same concept within a stalker’s slasher movie, but with the killer’s point of view. That is the idea portrayed in ‘In a Violent Nature.’
The film starts in the middle of a forest at night which sets a more creepy mood. We here see Johnny the main character rise from the grave, resurrected from the muddy grave in which he was buried after being killed by the townspeople several years back. This scene of him digging himself out lasts only two minutes but appears to be much longer because directors are not accustomed to shooting long scenes with the minimum amount of action characteristic of the digital world of cinematography.
The scene of action staking begins in a forest where several young men discover a dilapidated house. They go in there and they see a golden chain that lies on a piece of a wooden log. One of the guys takes it and they go back to where their friends are chilling at the campsite, they join them. This is something that looks eerie and looks more like scenes from horror movies that were the staple of the eighties like Friday the 13th.
After the guys leave, there appears a hand slowly pulling itself from the dust and sand of the ground. Finally, the corpse begins to decay, rises out of the coffin, and shuffles through the woods. Whilst it is not clear who the man is to start with or why he has returned from the grave, it is clear that he is a man with purpose. And he is.
We are introduced to Johnny, a young man who seems to be suffering from a form of disability and is, therefore, killed by the inhabitants. Nash employs long shots of Johnny with a hatchet as he approaches his victims in the woods so it becomes very clear that Johnny is not playing but rather is on a mission like a man going to work. But that is his job, to kill people.
One of the film’s major strengths is its unique perspective. By focusing on Johnny, the slasher, and portraying him as a methodical, almost workmanlike figure, the movie offers a fresh take on the genre. This approach makes Johnny more intriguing and gives the film a sense of purpose.
The long, quiet shots of Johnny moving through the forest are another strength. They build tension effectively and create a creepy atmosphere. These scenes stand out because they’re different from the fast cuts and constant action we often see in modern horror movies. This deliberate pacing helps to emphasize Johnny’s relentless nature.
The film also benefits from its effective use of traditional horror elements. The old shack, the eerie woods, and the group of unsuspecting young people all contribute to a classic horror vibe that fans of the genre will appreciate. The atmosphere is well-crafted and adds to the overall sense of dread.
However, the film does have its weaknesses. The slow pacing, while effective in building tension, might not appeal to everyone. Some viewers might find it tedious or drawn out, especially during the scenes where Johnny is just walking through the woods.
Another weakness is the lack of character development for the victims. We learn very little about them, which makes it hard to care about their fate. They have names, but these are rarely used, and they often feel like the “nameless rabble of victims” described in the story “A Christmas Story.” This can make the film feel less engaging since the audience isn’t emotionally invested in the characters.
However, it is still crystal clear that ‘In a Violent Nature’ can still give an effective horror experience. Johnny’s resurrection and his subsequent actions along with the motives behind the action continue to be a mystery to the audience. Unlike many horror movies that try to explain serial killers’ motivations and actions, this film does not need for it, like Michael Myers in the first “Halloween”. This is particularly useful in building the imagery of pure evil for him or the other characters.
The last scene, especially, the one including Kris, the character of Pavlovic, is quite memorable. It changes tones and gears up for a conclusion that itself offers a captivating final twist. In a way, it reminds me of the last scene from “The Sopranos” where some people will take it as a big plus and some will disagree, but the fact is that it stays in your mind.
As a result, the film ‘In a Violent Nature’ is a nice twist from typical slasher films with its patient murderer and narrative approach. It is not entirely without weaknesses, but it provides an interesting experience for viewers who can get bored by the constant use of stunts and high speeds in horror films.
