Wicked is a 2024 pop musical, and romance Movie directed by Jon M. Chu and written by Winnie Holzman, Dana Fox, and Gregory Maguire. The film stars Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, and Jonathan Bailey with a runtime of 2 hours and 40 minutes, theatre released on November 22, 2024.
Wicked, the story behind the fabled Land of Oz, tells the story of the Land of Oz from the point of view of the two witches that are depicted in the film, Elphaba and Glinda. The movie features Cynthia Erivo, a talented actress who has earned an Emmy, Grammy, and Tony for singing, acting, and dancing in Harriet and The Color Purple on Broadway.
Elphaba is an outcast from Shiz because of her green skin and has not yet realized the true potential of her ability. By her side is Ariana Grande, a Grammy-Award-winning, multi-platinum recording artist who stars as Glinda, the lovely and popular but often spoiled young woman who has yet to fully understand the value of kindness.
Their narrative kicks off at Shiz University in the mystical world of Oz: despite having opposing characters, their paths cross, and they are drawn to each other. Their newfound friendship is put to the test after they meet the Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
This meeting sets their lives on very different paths: Glinda seeks popularity and authority, while Elphaba remains authentic, resulting in dramatic and momentous outcomes and a transformation into the “Wicked Witch of the West.” In the end, it is these two women who define two great and distinct characters in the story as Glinda, the good witch, and the wicked witch of the West.
The Criticisms: A Not-So-Perfect Beginning
There needs to be reminded of the time when Wicked appeared on the stage of the Broad Way and people did not remain enchanted. Initial critics gave feedback that ranged from mediocre to negative. Praised by many, some had some rather harsh words to say about the $14 million budget for the production, the music used in the show, and its narrative.
Critiques of the Music: Also, a few harsh words were said about the score which was composed by Stephen Schwartz. Some of the songs that were produced are deemed to be dull by most of the reviewers though one of them named Wonderful was exceptional. Reviewers with Variety were less enthusiastic about the musical part of the show, citing it as too generic, referring to the songs as competent but bland, and excessively resorting to Broadway pop.
Performances: Glinda, portrayed by Kristin Chenoweth, was described as being ‘cute as a button’ but as one critic quipped, ‘I wish she had a zipper.’ Still, she found ways to apply humor and charm to her part. On the other hand, Idina Menzel in the role of Elphaba received positive reviews for the emotional scenes and her portrayal of a depth to the ‘Wicked Witch.
Storytelling Concerns: Some people thought that the show was in a crisis, as it was too childish to be watched and consumed by young audiences and at the same time not mature and sophisticated enough for adults. One of the reviewers even remarked to her surprise that the show appeared to subscribe to the notion that if only more money could be spent, then all difficulties would vanish, such as expending $14 million on the show’s production.
However, Wicked was not without its supporters. USA Today described it as a ‘wonderfully magical ride’ and appreciated its ‘elements of comedy, drama, and message’. In contrast to other TV show critics, USA Today appreciated the songs, stating that they are catchy and memorable, and rejoiced at the decision to focus on the empowering narrative of a woman. They also observed the important messages of the show concerning friendship, acceptance of oneself, and identity issues that are important in the life of every person.
While critics may have had a different opinion, the audiences were the ones who had the last word. Wicked received ten nominations for a Tony Award, and Idina Menzel received the Tony for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical. Although it failed to win the Best Musical category against Avenue Q, Wicked flew to glory and is still one of the most popular Broadway musicals to date. So far, it has made more than $1.7 billion globally, not to mention before the release of the film adaptation.
Ultimately, the message of Wicked was clear: everyone should be allowed to soar, no matter how critics tried to suppress that idea. As the movie brings this fabled wizard to the new generation, the message of acceptance, being yourself, and the fact that good isn’t always white and evil isn’t always black remain pertinent and compelling.
